Over 200 rallied Friday August 17th at the Seneca Marine Park in Walkins Glen to stop Inergy’s proposed gas storage and transport facility on Seneca Lake.  The facility has been  promoted as storage for LPG or liquid petroleum gas, which is predominantly propane and butane, but the connection to the development of the Marcellus shale and fracking seems lost on no one.

As Jane Winters points out in part one of this video “they (Inergy) no longer refer to propane storage at all.  If you go to their  site, it talks about natural gas and NGL storage”.  NGL, or natural gas liquids, contain  ethane, propane, butane, isobutane, and other condensates extracted during gas refining.  NGL come from the refining of wet gas, such as that from Marcellus wells in western Pennsylvania and  Ohio.  But, Inergy is involved with natural gas storage as well.  Winters quotes from Inergy’s website:

“Through its interest in Inergy Midstream and its ownership of Tres Palacios and US Salt, Inergy’s midsteam business platform includes strategically positioned natural gas storage and transportation hubs, one in the Northeasten U.S. and one in Texas, a premiere NGL storage business and an industry-leading solution mining and evaporative salt production company.”
